How a balcony gardener was able to harvest fresh vegetables every day!

Create an edible oasis in your home and enjoy the satisfaction (and stress relief!) of growing your own fresh food.

Have you tried gardening before, or fear the worst if you were to start?

Sound familiar?

🌱 How did it feel when you tried to grow potted grocery store tomatoes and basil but failed miserably?

🌱 How did it feel to eat your first 'home grown' food?

🌱 How does it feel to purchase plants but then they usually perish?

🌱 How does it feel to enjoy cooking from fresh herbs regularly?

🌱 How did you feel when an infestation of aphids spread across your entire balcony crop?

🌱 How does it feel to grow something from seed for the first time?

🌱 After chasing pigeons away, how does it feel when those blasted squirrels ruin some of your best crops?

🌱 What was it like when your garden kept your spirits high and anxiety levels low during a very difficult period?

How It All Started…

I started out in the world of gardening not as a gardener, but organizing workshops in the St. James Town neighbourhood of Toronto for other gardeners.

The participants who attended the workshops lived in the high-rise buildings that make up St. James Town. They hoped to learn how they could grow food on their balconies, and left the workshops with seeds and pots to get started on their new gardening adventures. But there were mixed results..

When the Growing Gets Tough...

People who came to the gardening workshops didn’t all get consistent results from their plants. Part of my job was to follow up with participants and do an evaluation. So I ended up hearing about dozens of experiences with balcony food plants. I got asked a lot of questions – even though at the time I was new to gardening myself!

One comment I repeatedly heard was that plants had lots of healthy leaves but no fruit, or they had green tomatoes that didn’t ripen. The tomato, though such a popular plant, did not in fact work for everyone. But then, what would be more satisfying to grow on more different balconies?

Cultivating solutions…

Through listening to many residents’ gardening trials and triumphs, I learned about the obstacles people face with balcony gardening and tried to think of solutions to help. High-rise balcony conditions are tough for plants! For instance, growing vegetables on the 26th floor, with a shadow from the neighbouring building and gusting wind, is not ideal for all vegetables.

I thought: Maybe we shouldn’t be starting with which vegetables people want to grow, but which plants are actually going to work in these harsh conditions. I wanted to answer the questions about growing more healthy food with less space...

IMG_2194.JPG

A Better Way to Grow…

I myself started growing my own vegetables. My roommate and I dug up some of the lawn out back for a little garden. I’d also hang boxes off our fire escape and plant my most frequently used herbs in them… So I could step out my back door to pick some chives for my scrambled eggs in the morning!

By this time, I had organized the St. James Town balcony gardening workshops for a couple seasons and felt more confident in what was needed: the right type of planting pot, how much soil and compost to use, and what kind of seeds could be planted on balconies. It was time for the next step: Putting all of my learnings together and sharing it back...

IMG_4679.jpg

Sharing is Caring…

I wanted to make a book. But I was asking myself: really, aren’t there already enough gardening books in this world? So I thought I could come up with something super simple. Not inundating people with more information. I also wanted it to be super accessible, small, low-cost and full of illustrations.

This is how An Illustrated Guide to Growing Food on Your Balcony came about. Its starting point was to create a summary of the bigger experiences I gained through organizing workshops

From Newbie Gardeners to Empowered Growers ...

This is my first time exclusively growing food. I’ve been enjoying the fruits of my labor for a few weeks now and it’s an incredibly satisfying feeling.

Knowing someone was available to get me started gave me the confidence I needed to jump in and get my hands dirty.”

“The simple instructions in your booklet and your quick responses to my questions were a valuable resource. Very important for the beginning veggie gardener. The process seemed overwhelming at first, but your instructions pared it down to basics. There will always be more to learn but necessary to start with some solid general knowledge.”

FAQ

Find the answers to our most common questions.

+ Q: The training started in April. Can I still join later?

Yes! You can join anytime. You will still get seeds in the mail, and all the resources from the month when you join. So for example if you sign up in mid-May, you can access everything that's been sent out in May.

+ Q: What do I need to participate?

Excitement about growing food, an email address and internet connection to get resources, and if you'd like the seed packets that are included you'll need a mailing address.

+ Q: Can I grow anything I want?

You can choose which plants you want to grow, and I’ll guide you to what works best in your growing conditions. If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve got lots of easy growing plant suggestions!

+ Q: Is your plant list multicultural?

Yes, it is. I include veggies and herbs (from sorrel and sweet potatoes, to lemongrass, purslane, and many more) that you can grow and use when cooking culturally specific meals.

+ Q: What if I don’t have a balcony?

This program will still help you grow your garden! The resources are geared towards container gardening, whether it's in your balcony, terrace, patio, or on the ground level! The training will even cover some aspects about growing indoors.

+ Q: Will I still be able to keep up with my garden if I need to be out of town on weekends?

Yes. There are great tricks for keeping plants watered while you’re away! These will be covered in the program.

+ Q: How much do I have to spend on supplies?

This will be totally dependent on how far you want to take your balcony garden! You can have some soil, find recycled pots, and grow from seed for just $25–$35. Or you can go all out, filling your space with larger planters, custom-made boxes, and spend more. However, the goal is to teach you how to grow a garden on your balcony even if you don’t have a ton of money to spend on it.

+ Q: How much time a week do I need to maintain a balcony garden?

It all depends on how much time you want to put into it. You can spend just a few minutes each day checking on your plants and watering them. Or you can make it a bigger daily activity that you put more energy into. (You may find that time flies when you’re gardening, and that you’ll enjoy the time spent not worrying about anything but tending to your plants!)

+ Q: I’m not used to eating fresh vegetables. Will this help me with eating new foods?

Yes, you will find it’s easy to start eating new things because you’re growing those foods yourself!

+ Q: How much food can I get from a balcony?

This will vary from person to person, but one way to think about it is in terms of the ingredients you use in your cooking. With balcony gardening, you will certainly be able to fully produce certain ingredients you use (e.g. don’t buy parsley all summer).

+ Q: I notice a lot of birds and squirrels around my balcony. Can I still garden there?

Yes, you can. In the program, you will learn how to prevent animals from destroying your balcony garden!

+ Q: My apartment overlooks the highway. Will my garden be safe from pollution?

Yes. Just remember to wash your harvests well. And also know that foods from the grocery store can often be more laden with chemicals and toxins you can’t see. So knowing exactly what kind of environment your garden is growing in will benefit you (versus not really knowing what conditions the foods from the grocery store are produced in).

+ Q: What if I don't have any gardening questions until partway through the subscription and then I want to ask more than one?

That's okay! You can ask your questions as they come up. I send out weekly answers to all the questions, so you'll see your answers and have the option of learning from what other people are asking too.

+ Q: I can’t do any heavy lifting because of my back or knees. Will that be a problem for gardening?

No, that shouldn’t prevent you from making your balcony garden. I’ll share ideas for how you can set up your garden in such a way where you won’t have to bend down or do any heavy lifting.

+ Q: I’m worried about water damage on my balcony. Will this be a problem?

No, it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s super easy to prevent any water damage from occurring.

+ Q: If I miss a session can I catch up later?

Yes, readings will be in your inbox and videos can be replayed. Plus, each week is self-contained and not dependent on the previous week’s teachings, you can just skip to the current week. Or you can always go back to the previous week’s recording, which be available to you.

+ Q: I don’t have a car. How will I get supplies for my balcony garden?

We’ll do things on a small enough scale that the supplies you buy will be easily portable, no car required!

+ Q: Will I always have access to the program, even after my subscription ends?

Yes! While the materials are sent to you in a timely fashion that aligns with the gardening season, everything I share will still be available to you for the whole year.

+ Q: Do I get a refund if my garden isn’t successful?

Yes. If you try the program and your garden fails, contact me within 30 days of purchasing your subscription and you’ll receive a full refund.
